Urgent Request regarding the political situation in Guinea and its consideration at the United Nations

Mr. Speaker, Honourable Members of the Parliament of the United Kingdom,

I am writing today to draw your urgent attention to the deeply concerning deterioration of the political situation in the Republic of Guinea. I respectfully request your intervention to urge His Majesty’s Government to formally bring this matter before the United Nations.

In September 2021, a military junta seized power through a coup d’état, ending the mandate of President Alpha Condé. Since then, the transitional authorities have repeatedly failed to honour their commitments to the Guinean people and the international community, including the United Nations. One such fundamental commitment was the public assurance that no member of the transitional government – including the President of the Transition, General Mamady Doumbouya – would be a candidate in future elections.

Regrettably, the junta subsequently orchestrated an electoral process that systematically excluded credible opposition candidates, thereby paving the way for its own victory. This process has deprived Guinean citizens of a genuine democratic choice and has severely compromised the prospects for a peaceful and legitimate transition to civilian rule.

Despite repeated appeals from Guinean civil society and public opinion for a transparent and inclusive electoral process, the response from the international community, including the United Nations, has remained insufficient and lacks coordination.

As a Permanent Member of the United Nations Security Council and a global champion of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, it is imperative that the United Kingdom uses its diplomatic influence to shine a light on this critical situation. I therefore urge the United Kingdom to take the lead in mobilising international support for the restoration of constitutional order and democratic governance in Guinea.

would be honoured by the opportunity to meet with you at the Palace of Westminster to discuss this crucial issue in greater depth and to explore avenues through which the United Kingdom could strengthen its support for democratic principles and human rights in Guinea.

Thank you for your kind attention to this urgent request. I look forward to your response and, pending that, I remain,

Yours sincerely,
