The African Manufacturers Foundation (AMF) has appointed Ameenah Gurib-Fakim as its new Chairperson, a move widely seen as a decisive step toward accelerating industrial growth and repositioning Africa’s manufacturing sector on the global stage.

A globally acclaimed scientist and former President of Mauritius, Gurib-Fakim brings a rare blend of scientific expertise, policy leadership, and international influence—qualities expected to transform AMF from a coordinating body into a catalytic force for industrialisation across the continent.

Her appointment signals more than a leadership transition; it marks a strategic pivot toward innovation-led manufacturing, stronger policy alignment, and deeper continental integration under frameworks such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

AMF said Gurib-Fakim’s leadership will enhance its ability to champion value addition and industrial research, helping African economies shift from raw material exports to high-value production.

With a distinguished background in biodiversity science, she is expected to drive the integration of science and technology into manufacturing ecosystems—an essential step in moving Africa up global value chains.

The Foundation also anticipates that her extensive global networks across governments, academia, and multilateral institutions will unlock strategic partnerships, attract foreign direct investment, and facilitate technology transfer.

These linkages are seen as critical to bridging Africa’s manufacturing sector with international markets.

Her experience as a former head of state is expected to strengthen AMF’s policy influence, particularly in shaping frameworks that support intra-African trade and industrial growth.

Analysts say her voice could play a pivotal role in aligning national industrial policies with continental ambitions.
Sustainability and inclusion are also set to feature prominently under her stewardship.

Gurib-Fakim has long championed green industrialisation and climate resilience, with a focus on ensuring that manufacturing growth benefits women and youth across the continent.

AMF Chief Executive Officer Lebo Radebe, from his base in Johannesburg , South Africa, described the appointment as a turning point for the organisation.

“We are deeply privileged to welcome H.E. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim as our Chairperson. Her visionary leadership, global stature, and passion for Africa’s development align perfectly with AMF’s mission. We are confident that under her guidance, the Foundation will drive meaningful impact and unlock new opportunities for African manufacturers,” he said.

Under her leadership, AMF plans to accelerate key initiatives including the Digital Manufacturing Exhibition, cross-border manufacturing collaborations, and investment mobilisation platforms designed to convene industry leaders, policymakers, and financiers from across Africa and beyond.

The Foundation said Gurib-Fakim’s appointment reinforces its commitment to strong governance, inclusive growth, and elevating Africa’s industrial capacity globally. It also strengthens AMF’s ambition to promote the “Made and Celebrated in Africa” standard as a hallmark of quality and competitiveness.

As Africa pushes to industrialise and expand intra-continental trade, Gurib-Fakim’s appointment is being viewed as a bold and timely intervention—one that positions AMF not merely as an institution, but as a driving force behind a new era of African manufacturing transformation.
