Zambia calls for enhanced regional cooperation on migration Nairobi, Kenya - Thursday, 19th March, 2026 Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security (MHAIS), State Counsel (SC) Jacob Jack Mwiimbu says Zambia continues to experience an influx of migrants and refugees, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated efforts among countries along key migration routes. During a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, Kenya, as part of his official visit to attend a meeting convened by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on comprehensive solutions for Burundian refugees, Mr. Mwiimbu emphasized the importance of enhanced regional cooperation in addressing migration challenges affecting the region. Currently serving as United Party for National Development (UPND) Monze Central Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), Mwiimbu highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration between Zambia and Kenya in areas of security, migration management and information sharing. Mwiimbu stressed that sustained regional dialogue remains critical in developing durable solutions to displacement and irregular migration. Mwiimbu underscored the need to deepen economic cooperation among African countries, noting that increased intra-African trade and investment are key to building economic resilience and driving growth. Mwiimbu encouraged stronger bilateral engagement between Zambia and Kenya to promote tourism, improve service delivery standards and attract investment. Mwiimbu commended Kenya for its progress across various sectors and expressed Zambia’s interest in learning from the country’s best practices to enhance its own development initiatives. Mwiimbu was accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), Mubita Luwabelwa, and other senior government officials. Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Alfred Musemuna, welcomed the Minister and his delegation, expressing appreciation for the visit and reaffirming the strong bilateral relations between Zambia and Kenya.
