ZAMBIAN Developmental Media Alliance (ZADEMA) Executive President and Prisoner of Conscience (PoC) Lus 4818/18 Derrick Sinjela says it is saddening to note that by laws are ignored with impunity, with Lusaka City Council (LCC) concentrating it’s work on getting K5 days fees from vendors at Kafue Road Footbridge, now a toilet for urine and faecal matter ignoring ,provision of a clean and environmentally friendly trading open space in the Central Business District (CBD) of Lusaka.
For instance, the Kafue Road Footbridge in Lusaka, is now a makeshift toilet, with authorities ignoring to intervene despite journalists highlighting this eyesore.
And this is happening when a diarrheal red light has been raised in the Common Market for East and Central Africa (COMESA), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the Great Lakes region.
In addition, vendors are now taking the law in their hands, in makeshift stalls-kiosks and trading on the perimeter of a 33 KV ZESCO Power station at Kulima Tower!
Energy Minister Peter Chibwe Kapala, Energy Regulation Board (ERB) Chairperson Reynolds Bowa, ZESCO Managing Director (MD) Victor Mapani and ZESCO Spokesperson, Henry Kapata are all privy but no end to this time bomb waiting to explode.
“What is happening in LUSAKA is ❤️ heartbreaking, how can a sane person or authorities allow, a Footbridge to be used to answer a call of nature,” complained a visibly and audibly hurt Mr. Sinjela, currently serving as Executive President at Zambian Children Young People and Women in Development (ZCYPWD).
Sinjela is grieving that since raising concern on the abuse of the bridge last year on Saturday, 29th October, 2022 and lately on Monday, 9th January, 2023, Lusaka Mayor Chilando Chitangala and Lusaka City Council (LCC) Town Clerk Brighton Mbaibai has not sent a team to clean up the bridge and eventually restore sanity, 84 days later as at Saturday, 21st January, 2023.

Sadly, Government authorities including ministers, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms. Nelli Mutti, Chief Justice, State Counsel Mumba Malila and Bank of Zambia BoZ Governor Dr. Denny Hamachila Kalyalya unknowingly use the route to and from work without being alerted by staff that faeces and urine may fall on anyone’s motorcade.
Sinjela equally called on corporates that have mounted bill boards on both sides of the Kafue Road Footbridge to remove one side or reduce it’s height as the covered area is now used as a hide-out to answer a call of nature and casual couples having sex in broad daylight.
Perhaps, time is nigh or has come for Minister of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) Gary Chilala Nkombo, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) Permanent Secretary (PS) for Administration, Mr. Maambo Haamaundu and PS Technical Services (PS-TS) Nicholas Phiri to intervene in Keeping Lusaka and Zambia, clean and healthy.
