Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, partners with others to feed 4,114 Kabwe learners

The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MFL), working in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders, feeding of 4,114 learners under the Home-Grown School Meals (HGSM) Programme in selected schools in Kabwe District of the Central Province.

In a Monday, 2nd March, 2026 Press Statement signed and circulated by Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Principal Public Relations Officer Benny Munyama, beneficiary schools include 709 learners at Neemtree Primary School, 1,471 at Mtshede Primary School, and 364 at Makwati Community Primary School. At secondary level, 463 learners at Gombe Secondary School and 1,107 at Makululu Day Secondary School are benefiting from the initiative.

Principal Fisheries and Livestock Nutrition Officer, Ms. Bwalya Tembo said that the feeding initiative being implemented in both primary and secondary schools is enhancing the nutrition profile of maize, beans and soya-based meals served to learners by incorporating animal sourced foods such as eggs, milk and fish.
Ms. Tembo explained that adding animal sourced high-quality protein foods to the school feeding programme is part of efforts by government to combat malnutrition, improve education outcomes and create market-linkages for local small-scale farmers.

“The school feeding programme presents an opportunity for local small-scale farmers to supply schools with Fisheries and Livestock products such as milk, eggs and fish. This predictable demand supports improved production and productivity, enhances household incomes, and contributes to better nutrition, food security and livelihoods in our communities,” said Ms. Tembo.

The school feeding programme is part of numerous government policy reforms to support President Hakainde Hichilema’s aspirations to improve access to education for all and providing a more conducive learning environment, resulting in improved academic performance.
