An aspiring Council Chairperson for Serenje District Doris lkona has encouraged fellow women to take up leadership roles in government, citing the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making.
Ms. lkona call follows a radio programme aimed at increasing women’s participation in local governance positions, implemented by the Centre for Zero Waste in Africa and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
An advocates for unity among district leaders and increased revenue streams for the local authority, and investor Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Ms. lkona contributions restated a view that inclusive leadership strengthens decision-making and ultimately benefits the larger community.

Ms. lkona welcomed the 933 and 116 hotline initiative for reporting violence against women in elections, launched by the National Democratic Institute and Non-Governmental Gender Organisations’ Coordinating Council (NGOCC) with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is the support.
Ms. lkona believes the 933 and 116 hotline will help reduce violence against women in politics, through promoting a safer environment for female leaders.
