The Media Network Action on Climate Change (MENACC) is deeply concerned about the recent environmental disaster in the country, where a tailings dam partially collapsed, releasing mining waste into the, Chibuluma stream, affecting aquatic life, crops, and the surrounding environment.

Just over a year ago, the country suffered a similar disaster. In light of the latest incident, MENACC urges the government to conduct a comprehensive audit of all tailings dams in the country to prevent such disasters in the future. The audit should assess the structural integrity of these dams, identify potential risks, and recommend measures to mitigate them.

We commend the government’s swift response, including the directive to the company responsible to present themselves and take full responsibility for the damage. However, more needs to be done to address the root causes of such incidents and ensure accountability.

MENACC calls on the government to:

– Strengthen Regulations: Enhance oversight and enforcement of environmental regulations in the mining sector.

– Increase Transparency: Ensure that affected communities have access to information about the risks and impacts of mining activities.

– Support Affected Communities: Provide adequate compensation and support to those affected by the disaster.

The latest incident highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management in Zambia’s mining sector. We urge the government and mining companies to prioritize sustainability and environmental protection.
