“Media houses must consider coming up with gender desks and gender policies to enhance gender reporting,”
Press Statement Thursday, 17th November, 2022
THE Media Liaison Committee (MLC) is urging media houses in Zambia to consider establishing gender desks and gender policies to promote gender reporting.
MLC has noted with concern that few media houses in Zambia have gender desks, a situation which is contributing to having males dominating as news sources in the news.
Article 8 (d) of the Zambian Constitution provides for national values and principles that embrace human dignity, equity, social justice, equality and non-discrimination.
The voices of women, youth, children and people living with disabilities are usually left out in the media hence discouraging them to participate in decision making and in up positions of influence such as in politics.
Gender desks are cardinal because they have specialised journalists who understand the need for the media to be gender sensitive and always remember to include the voices of men, women, youth, children and people living with disabilities and ensure they also receive equal and fair coverage in the media.
On gender policies, it is important that media houses have the policies so that they are guided on how to deal with matters of their employees as well do’s and don’ts in gender reporting in a methodical manner.
The MLC acknowledges the recent forum organised by the Zambia Council for Social Development (ZCSD) where stakeholders observed the need for the media to be involved in embracing gender and its development.
The MLC is ready to partner and work with ZCSD and other stakeholders to enhance gender reporting in the Zambian media.
