Emeralds will pay Zambia's debts, prods UPPZ Zambia President Charles Chanda as he predicts Govt. leaders won't be active in 2043
By Derrick Sinjela
United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader Charles Chanda is predicting that not a single Government Cabinet Minister and political leaders will be economically active by 2043, 17 years later from Saturday, 21st March, 2026.
In an apparent reference to insatiable appetite by the United Party for National Development (UPND) contraction of debt, Mr. Chanda regretted that present day leaders led by President Hakainde Sammy Hichilema and Finance and National Planning (MoFNP), Minister Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane continued signing and putting the collective future into trouble.
While in a celebratory tone, Dr. Musokotwane says the original loan used to finance supplies for the Ministry of Defence signed in June 2018 was due to mature in 2027 but successfully restructured to mature in 2043, Chanda is unhappy that Zambia continues finding a difficulty in paying her debts as rescheduled payments mortgage (burden) the future.
In a DiamondTVOnline story titled: “Government restructured €94.6 million debt with Italy, extends maturity to 2043, done by Rachel Mumba, Dr. Musokotwane and Enrico De Agostini, Italian Ambassador to Zambia confirmed that Government has signed an agreement with Italy to restructure a €94.6 million debt facility, extending the repayment period from 2027 to 2043 in a move aimed at easing the country’s financial obligations.
Dr. Musokotwane says Zambia resumed servicing debt repayments on all finalized restructuring agreements, signalling renewed commitment to meeting its financial obligations.
Meanwhile, Ambassador De Agostini says Zambia’s commitment to settling its debt obligations opens the door for increased trade and investment support from Italian financial institutions and strengthens economic ties between the two nations.

Ambassador De Agostini noted that throughout the restructuring process, Italy has acted as more than just a creditor.
Ambassador De Agostini says within the G7 and G20 frameworks, Italy has consistently advocated for a human-centered approach to debt sustainability.
In response, Chanda worried that instead of resolving debt challenge, UPND leaders had opted to burden Zambian children, who will grapple with payment of borrowed money.

Time without number Chanda continues advising successive governments to prudently earn income from the extractive industry – more especially the precious mineral emerald sector.
“On this one, l feel government should have done better. We can pay our debts. So, after 2043 that is when people will realize that after all there was no free education and Constituency Development Fund (CDF) was not what citizens were told. Why do we spend money that is not ours and paint the picture that we care? Let’s go the emerald way and pay our debts. Let us show love to our future generations. If we as parents cannot pay our debts where will our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren get money from to pay this debt in 2043?,” queried Chanda.
“Our mineral wealth would have depleted beyond measure. Our roads would have made money for foreign investors. Let’s do the right thing,” UPPZ President Chanda advised.
