On Monday, 22nd December, 2025, the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) marked a joyful and historic moment as Canon Reverend James Phiri officially assumed office as General Secretary (Gen. Sec.) following his appointment, ushering in a new chapter of leadership.
In a warm and symbolic handover ceremony held the CCZ Secretariat, on Bishops Road Kabulonga, Lusaka, predecessor, Bishop Emmanuel Yona Chikoya, handed over the CCZ Gen. Sec. baton to Canon Rev. Phiri.

Bishop Chikoya’s transition from the office of General Secretary at CCZ comes after his election and enthronement as Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Central Zambia, a new chapter the Council of Churches in Zambia embraces with pride and prayerful support.

“As we rejoice in his elevation, we also acknowledge that he will be deeply missed for his dedicated leadership, wisdom, and commitment to the ecumenical mission of the Council.
We sincerely wish Bishop Chikoya God’s abundant blessings as he embarks on this new and sacred journey of episcopal ministry,” read a CCZ Secretariat Press Statement in part.

At the same time, the Council of Churches in Zambia is filled with excitement as Canon Rev. Phiri steps into the role of General Secretary.
Prior to his appointment, Canon Rev. Phiri faithfully served the CCZ as Chaplain and Education Secretary, roles in which he demonstrated humility, vision, and a deep passion for the work of the Church. – Council of Churches in Zambia.
