Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE) Permanent Secretary (PS), Dr. Douty Chibamba says the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) plays a critical role in certifying forests to ensure they are properly managed while enabling local communities to benefit from sustainable practices.

Dr. Chibamba revealed that the FSC is seeking to mobilise approximately US$400 million across Africa over a 10-year period to support countries demonstrating strong commitment to sustainable forest management.
Dr. Chibamba was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on the Zambia High Commission in Nairobi, where he was received by Zambia’s High Commissioner to Kenya, His Excellency Alfred Musemuna.
Dr. Chibamba is in Kenya to attend an FSC meeting bringing together member countries to discuss sustainable forestry initiatives and financing mechanisms.
The Permanent Secretary explained that forest certification guarantees responsible forest management by preventing illegal or excessive logging, promoting environmental protection, and encouraging community participation.
Dr. Chibamba noted that sustainably managed forests provide essential ecosystem services such as food production, climate regulation, and mitigation of floods and droughts, which are critical in the face of climate change.
Dr. Chibamba further emphasised that certified forests have the potential to attract companies willing to pay for ecosystem services, thereby creating financial incentives for local communities and strengthening conservation efforts.
During the FSC meeting, participating countries presented their respective forest resources, achievements, and challenges in advancing sustainable forest management.
Dr. Chibamba said Zambia utilised the platform to showcase its progress in forest governance and to position itself to benefit from future funding opportunities under the FSC initiative.
Dr. Chibamba reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to sustainable forest management and enhanced international cooperation as part of advancing the country’s green economy agenda. – Ministry of Green Economy and Environment (MGEE)/ Zambia High Commission Nairobi Kenya.
