Remain non-partisan, ZUPED President Nakuweza Richwel Mwene prods teachers in Chawama Constituency

As Citizens prepare to cast votes for a preferred candidate in the forthcoming Chawama Constituency by-elections on Thursday 15th January 2026, Zambia Union of Professional Educators (ZUPED) president Nakuweza Richwel Mwene (NRM)  is urging teachers to remain non-partisan.

As public servants mentoring pupils and students from a cross section of the political divide, Mr. Mwene advised peers to exhibit ethical conduct and professionalism.

Following a decision by Speaker of the National Assembly, State Counsel (SC) Ms. Nelly Kashumba Butete Mutati’s nullification of Patriotic Front (PF) Member of Parliament (MP) Ms. Tasila Lungu-Mwansa’s Chawama parliamentary seat, nine candidates are seeking to replace Edgar Chagwa Lungu’s daughter.

The nine aspirants are; Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD’s) Bright Nundwe of the Tonse Alliance, United Party for National Development (UPND) is fielding Morgan Muunda, after Timothy Kantenga was disqualified on account of a recent transfer from Lusaka Central Constituency, which is yet to be verified by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Harry Kalaba’s Citizens First Party  candidate, is Captain Davison Mulenga, now on a door-to-door and community engagements campaign.

Peter Chanda’s New Congress Party has settled for Mohammad Mutete, Dr. Richard Silumbe’s Leadership Movement ( LM) is fielding Ntazana Musukuma, Saboi Imboela’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) has backed James Phiri and three independent candidates; Alfred Mageza, George Mwenya of Binwell Mpundu’s Movement For Good Governance ichabaice (Young People) and Elijah Siatwaambo.
