Zambia Sugar eyes 👀 500, 000 mt annual production by 2030

Zambia Sugar Managing Director Oswald Magwenzi is on course to upscaling the firm’s annual production to 500,000 metric tonnes in the next three (3) to five (5)years, from the current 400,000 metric tonnes.

Mr. Magwenzi was speaking at the 34th International Sugar Organisation Conference held in London, United Kingdom (UK) from Tuesday, 2nd to Wednesday 3rd December 2025, under the theme “Sugar – So Much More than a Sweetener.”

The meeting was attended by Zambia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, her Excellency Macenje Mazoka, as well as First Secretary-Trade at the Zambia High Commission in London, Yvonne Zulu.

Magwenzi stated that Zambia Sugar’s continued stellar financial operations with record profit of K2.6 billion in 2024, is as a result of the company’s strong market position, supported by a robust distribution network.

He added that the company was committed to increasing sugar production with a firm commitment to workplace safety, as well as investment in efficient technologies such as Drip Irrigation and Synergistic Surface Irrigation and Drainage.

Magwenzi further highlighted ongoing climate-resilience investments, including enhanced water monitoring, improved cane varieties, satellite-based weather forecasting, and expanded use of renewable energy.

Magwenzi shared the Twazabuka Project, a K1.7 billion investment in a state-of-the-art customer service facility designed, among other functions, to support flexible, year-round delivery to customers.

Magwenzi highlighted Zambia Sugar’s ongoing efforts to diversify its operations to include power generation, as well as explore opportunities in fuel ethanol and specialty chemicals such as furfural.

The Nakambala Sugar factory in Mazabuka, Southern Province is Africa’s largest single mill and ranks seventh in total sugarcane production, after South Africa, Egypt, Kenya, Sudan, Eswatini, and Uganda.
