Zambia makes serious losses in Post-Harvest Activities

Zambia faces significant post-harvest challenges, with losses estimated at 30β40% of key crops like maize and soybeans.
These losses are mainly driven by inadequate storage facilities, poor drying practices, pest infestations, limited access to modern handling technologies, and weak market linkages that force farmers to store grain in unsafe conditions or sell immediately at low prices.

In response, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) supports Zambia through interventions aimed at reducing these losses.
The programme promotes improved storage solutions such as hermetic bags and silos, better drying and handling practices, and farmer training on post-harvest management.
It also strengthens value chains by improving market access and aggregation systems.
Overall, AGRAβs work in Zambia seeks to reduce post-harvest losses, improve food security, and increase farmer incomes by addressing structural weaknesses in the countryβs post-harvest systems.
