Zambia’s President pushes for boost in KCM’s Konkola Deep Mining Project

Cape Town, South Africa – 9th February, 2026 – Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has urged Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) to prioritize the development of the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP), emphasizing the need to focus on core mining operations.

Speaking to KCM’s Board Chairperson Dr. Moses Banda and Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Dr. John Kunda on the sidelines of the Investing in African Mining Indaba, President Hichilema stressed that KCM should concentrate on expanding KDMP while contributing to related sustainable investments in the country.

Earlier, in his keynote address, President Hichilema commended the transformation of Zambia’s mining sector, acknowledging its significant contribution to the country’s positive economic outlook.

He expressed optimism about the sector’s potential to drive growth and development.

The President’s call comes as Zambia seeks to increase copper production and attract investment in the mining industry.

The KDMP is a key project aimed at boosting KCM’s copper output and extending the life of the mine.
