The Department of Fisheries today 26/12/2025 conducted a successful field day in which a local cooperative Epotuli harvested fish, demonstrating practical aquaculture skills and value addition at community level.
Speaking during the event, Mundia Mundia, the Ag Fisheries Coordinator, commended the activity and called for more such initiatives in the coming years.

“We need to see more activities like this in 2026 and beyond. This is a good job by the Department of Fisheries,” Mundia said.
The field day was also used as a learning platform for farmers. Fisheries Officer Gift Mwenda led practical training sessions, teaching farmers how to properly gut fish for drying, an important process that improves preservation, quality, and market value.

On behalf of the host cooperative, farmer Joseph Musenge expressed gratitude to the Department of Fisheries for its continued support and extension services, noting that such engagements empower farmers with knowledge and skills to improve their livelihoods.
However, the event was not without controversy. Some fishermen from the same locality raised allegations against district staff, accusing them of unfair practices during the fishing ban. The fishermen alleged that confiscated fish are sometimes shared among officials and later resold to the same fishermen.
When contacted to comment on the allegations, Mundia Mundia dismissed the claims and urged those making the accusations to follow proper channels.

The Department of Fisheries has continued to emphasize compliance with fishing regulations, particularly during the annual fishing ban, which is aimed at protecting fish stocks and ensuring sustainable fisheries for future generations.
