AN INTERNATIONAL multi-award-winning filmmaker who premiered recently launched a film called ‘Helping Chalo’ at the Numetro Cinema in Lusaka he is advocating for safer methods.
Emmanuel Mwape told journalists in an event launched on 9th September 22 event that was attended by local health personnel, media personalities, content creators and the general public tells the story touches on various subjects that border on human rights, nicotine products, cessation, drug control, tobacco control, drug laws, cessation, policy formulations and many other various subjects.
Mwape is using digital storytelling to amplify unheard narratives and foster conversations and training on tobacco harm reduction.
Through engaging with relevant stakeholders involved in policy formulation, the latest movie on the market will be used to curb the use of tobacco and encourage the use of safer alternatives to smoked tobacco for the already smokers.
In this fictitious educational story, Mwape is telling a story about a woman who sets up a cooperative center that sells safer nicotine products but must face a local cigarette seller and a secret smoker who uses the money to entice people to stop smoking instead of providing long-lasting solutions to help people quit smoking completely.
He said this product leaves a lot of questions and recommendations to be answered on various subjects on policy formulations, myths, propaganda, and corruption concerning tobacco harm reduction.
He also uses the concept of harm reduction as a key strategy in reducing the harm of tobacco to individuals.
Last year, Mwape is said to have produced a short film titled “Saving Chalo” where he adopted “Helping Chalo” into a feature, It is also a production about tobacco harm reduction, this short film has so far received 30 international festival selections, screened in Uganda, Poland, Italy, Brazil, UK, many others and won an “audience choice award” at the uMugungundlovu film festival in south Africa An “audience award” is typically an award at a film festival which is selected by the audience attending the festival.
Emmanuel Mwape is currently an advanced scholar of The Tobacco harm reduction program, a program funded by Knowledge-Action-Change an NGO that focuses on harm reduction as a key public health strategy with forty years of experience in work on drug use, HIV, smoking, and sexual health.
Mwape also graduated from the multichoice Talent Factory as one of the best students, he is known for producing several short films that have screened at international film festivals and for working on local productions such as Uncle Limbani comedy-drama series, the painting, and many others as a Director of photography, he is passionate about telling stories that are related to human rights, culture, and social beliefs.
