The Leadership Movement (LM) has urged lawmakers to prioritize public health over commercial interests as Parliament debates the Tobacco Control Bill N.A.B 40 2025.
Speaking during an appearance on Metro FM’s Talk Show The Arena, LM Spokesperson Patson Kasongo Chalwe said the proposed legislation presents a dual challenge — balancing economic activity with safeguarding citizens’ health.
Mr. Chalwe stated that while tobacco remains a recognized business sector, the wellbeing of Zambians must take precedence in the national interest.
“The interest of the people must override profit,” . Chalwe emphasized.
Chalwe called on Members of Parliament to demonstrate responsibility by ensuring that the final Act clearly outlines the full harmful effects associated with tobacco use.

Chalwe acknowledged the importance of designated smoking areas but stressed that the nation must confront the serious health risks posed by tobacco and adopt stronger protective measures to safeguard citizens.
Chalwe urged legislators to enact a law that will stand the test of time and be remembered for placing people before profit.
The Tobacco Control Bill NAB 40 2025, is currently under parliamentary review in Parliament.
