Govt. finalises stunting reduction strategy

Government has finalised the preparation of the National Stunting Reduction Strategy, aimed at reducing stunting from 32 percent to 15 percent by 2030.

The final draft strategy, developed by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in collaboration with the National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC), was presented at an engagement meeting with cooperating partners in Lusaka today (Tuesday, 24th March, 2026).

Mrs. Kapusana who is also Deputy Chairperson for Permanent Secretaries’ Committee on Food and Nutrition highlighted the government’s appreciation for support received from cooperating partners, including UNDP, UNICEF, FAO, WFP, EU, and World Bank, in promoting nutrition and food security.

She noted that stunting in Zambia has continued to be a matter of national concern, and the strategy is a key step towards addressing this challenge.

The strategy was developed with input from key line ministries, government agencies, and cooperating partners.

Mrs. Kapusana has expressed enthusiasm for the document, praising the efforts of those involved in its preparation.

The government aims to achieve the target through a whole-of-society approach, making nutrition “everyone’s business”.

The Deputy Chairperson for Permanent Secretaries’ Committee on Food and Nutrition Kapusana urged stakeholders to support the implementation of the strategy, emphasising that collective efforts are crucial to reducing stunting and improving the nation’s health and well-being.
