Gift Machobani throws weight behind Zambezi Economic Free Zone

Kazungula South constituency aspirant Gift Machobani has reaffirmed his support for the Zambezi Economic Free Zone, describing the Mandia-based project as a strategic national investment aligned with President Hakainde Hichilema’s economic transformation agenda.

In a statement issued by his campaign team yesterday that Mr. Machobani noted with concern misleading assertions that he is opposed to the development of the economic zone, clarifying that such claims are false.

“I wish to state categorically that I fully support the economic zone initiative in Mandia,” Mr Machobani said.

“I was personally present when His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema launched this important project, and I remain committed to its success,” said Machobani.

Machobani emphasised that the economic zone is a forward-looking investment designed to stimulate economic growth, attract both local and foreign investment, and create employment opportunities for the people of Kazungula South and the wider Southern Province.

“This project is not a white elephant,” Machobani said.

“It is a long-term economic driver that will unlock opportunities in manufacturing, trade and logistics, particularly given Kazungula’s strategic position as a regional border hub,” said Machobani

Machobani acknowledged concerns raised by members of the community regarding the pace of visible development but urged patience, noting that large-scale economic projects are implemented in phases.

“It is important for our people to understand that such developments take time,” Machobani said.

“Initial infrastructure, such as access roads, is only the first step. This is followed by investor mobilisation, policy alignment and the gradual establishment of industries,” prods Machobani.

Machobani called for unity and collaboration among stakeholders, stressing that the success of the economic zone will depend on partnerships between Government, the private sector and the local community.

“We must avoid undermining a transformative national project through misinformation. Instead, we should rally behind it and position ourselves to benefit from the jobs and business opportunities it will create,” Machobani advised.

Machobani reiterated his alignment with President Hichilema’s development agenda, particularly efforts focused on industrialisation, job creation and economic diversification.

“I stand firmly with the President’s vision for economic transformation. The economic zone in Mandia is part of that vision, and I will continue to support its successful implementation for the benefit of our people,” said Machobani.

Machobani encouraged local entrepreneurs, young people and investors to prepare themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities linked to the project.
