Statement by the National Arts Council of Zambia Chairperson Ms. Maureen Lilanda on the status of ISBN issuance in Zambia

National Arts Council (NAC) Ms. Maureen Lilanda

The Council wishes to inform publishers, writers, academic institutions, and the general public that the issuance of International Standard Book Numbers (ISBN s) in Zambia is currently undergoing a transitional phase.

A process is underway led by the International ISBN agency to identify a new institution that will assume this important national function . In the interim, arrangements have been made for a neighbouring ISBN agency to support Zambian publishers on a temporary basis to ensure continuity in access to ISBN services.

In light of this development, all publishers and authors requiring ISBN s are advised to directly contact the International ISBN Agency via info@isbn-international.org, clearly indicating that they are based in Zambia, in order to receive appropriate guidance and support. The ISBN system remains a critical component of the global publishing ecosystem, enabling the identification, distribution, and commercialization of books and related publications.

It is therefore essential that Zambian creators continue to access this service without disruption, particularly at a time when the country is seeking to expand its footprint in regional and international literary markets.

The Council recognizes the strategic importance of this transition and welcomes the opportunity presented by the International ISBN Agency for Zambia to establish a robust, transparent, and internationally compliant ISBN administration system.

The Council will engage relevant stakeholders in the publishing and creative sectors to ensure that a sustainable institutional framework is established, one that strengthens Zambiaโ€™s literary value chain and supports the growth of its knowledge economy.

The Council remains committed to safeguarding the interests of creators and ensuring that Zambiaโ€™s creative industries are supported by strong systems, effective governance, and global integration. – Ms Maureen Lilanda, Chairperson
