Clarification on Allegations ,Misinformation About Mr. Munir Zulu, Poisoning Claims

PRESS STATEMENT. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) categorically dismisses as false and misleading the social media claims alleging that inmate Munir Zulu was poisoned through an apple while in custody. No such incident has occurred, and routine welfare and medical checks show no signs of poisoning or harm.

For clarity, on 16th November 2025, Mr. Zulu reported to the clinic after choking on an apple. He informed medical staff that a piece of the fruit had briefly obstructed his airway. Clinic personnel immediately attended to him, and with clinical assistance to help clear the obstruction, he was relieved shortly afterward. At no time did he claim the apple was suspicious or provided by an officer or inmate. The apples were brought by his own family, who would naturally be the first point of inquiry if any concern arose.

This was a simple choking incident, consistent with what can happen to anyone. Nevertheless, in line with internationally recognised correctional best practices and as a precautionary measure, ZCS has temporarily restricted fruit deliveries for Mr. Zulu and requested that he and his family designate two authorised individuals to bring him food, in order to narrow the chain of custody and prevent future misunderstandings.

We emphasise:
1. All inmate meals and authorised food items are strictly supervised in line with security and health protocols.
2. There has been no breach of procedure and no attempt by anyone to harm Mr. Zulu.
3. No poisoning incident has been recorded, nor has any inmate required emergency treatment as alleged.
4. The misinformation circulating is intended to mislead the public and create unnecessary alarm.

ZCS urges the public and the media to avoid spreading unverified information and to rely on official communication. We remain committed to the safety, rights, and wellbeing of all persons in our custody.
