The “Gold Mining Cohabitation Model (GMCM) ” developed this year 2025, anchored on people-centric can easily help to formalize the gold industry, enhance trade and transparency in transactions, said Dr. Kelvin Kamayoyo, Zambian Economist and Researcher. The GMCM can also be used to grow the precious minerals industry from Kasempa, Kalumbila, Mufumbwe, Chingola, Chililambobwe, Mumbwa, to Serenje, Mpika, Rufunsa, Petauke, Sinda, Mapatizya, Monze and Shangombo. The Model has since been shared with the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Mines some months ago and what remains is implementation.

The model helps to bring together the Anchor Gold Processor (can be owned by ZCCM-IH/IDC alone or in partnership with others or allow the private sector to wholly own and run it alone), Artisanal miners or Cooperatives, Bank of Zambia or any Off-taker, lnsurance services, Restaurants, Currency BUREAU, and CCTV Security services firm, NGOs to build capacity among Cooperatives, Weather Department, Zambia Revenue Authority, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Mines-Occupational Safety, and ZEMA, all in one place to operate freely and transact smoothly. However, a Lead Agency or Site Manager institution would have to be appointed to ensure everything is in place, effect standards operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure every actor is operating within their ambit.

The development of the Gold Mining Cohabitation Model had taken note of how other countries globally are promoting people-centric in mining or inclusiveness and sustainable mining such as in Peru, Chile, Colombia, Sudan, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Ghana, and Tanzania, and has integrated different concepts for dealing with heterogeneous industry players but all enabled to focus on a single target commodity.

Further to guarantee implementation, the Gold Mining Cohabitation Model only takes six (6) weeks to set up operations and then commissioning on an identified mining site be it Senseli Mine or any mining site anywhere in Zambia or beyond. Let’s say any undertaking moves in Senseli Mine premises on Monday 10th November, 2025 using the “Gold Mining Cohabitation Model” by Monday, 22nd December, 2025 the artisanal gold miners or cooperatives would be actively extracting material and depositing it with the Anchor Gold Processor and thereafter collect a receipt of payments for their gold or commodity. Using a receipt of payment a cooperative or artisanal gold miner would then freely and safely walk to the currency BUREAU located within the mine site to collect their US$ or Kwacha equivalent for their extracted gold or any precious mineral.

After 61 years of independence, Zambia qualifies to be called an “Adult in mining” and it is only prudent that we endeavour to test implementation of different types of models or strategies that have in their design people-centric arrangements in order to broadly address inequalities, accelerate socioeconomic inclusiveness and foster sustainable development. As some would say, “if you can imagine it, then you can create it or you can do it”. Lets go on the mining surface and underground to implement and implement and then people would benefit and benefit. The model is very simple, clear and helps to bring about transparency and accountability in the gold or precious minerals industry anywhere it can be implemented.
