Zambia’s wasted 60 Independence Years – Dr. Mbita Chitala
All the commanding heights of our economy must be owned by Zambians. This includes our land, copper mines, commercial banks, pension funds. We should introduce a social market economy in which the state enterprises will take the lead. We should end the UPND ethnic divisions by re introducing merit appointments in public service and end tribalism, nepotism and bigotry. We should have a zero tolerance against corruption, institute a judicial enquiry to reclaim all what has been stolen since privatization and punish the thieves. We should professionalize the public service, insure the separation of powers and stop the destruction of our judiciary and legislature. We should address the need for massive public works, create job opportunities, subsidize agriculture and pursue an independent industrialization path. We should invest in education and health and our defence and security to ensure peaceful communities. All this requires that we have a developmental state and the overthrow of neo-colonial comprador elements that are currently in charge of our governance and who are puppets of imperialism. Our country needs change to ensure our unity, stop blatant thefts of public assets, have good governance anchored on a democratic Constitution, citizen ownership of our land, industrialization based on our state and Middle classes. Aluta Continua. These are some of my thoughts as I sadly celebrate these 60 years of our wasted independence.
Note: Today, Thursday, 24th October 2024, Zambia commemorates her 60th Independence – Diamond Jubilee on the theme: “60 Years Strong: Honouring Our Heritage, Embracing the Future.”
