GENERATION LEAD ZAMBIA – 16 DAYS ACTIVISM ON GENDER BASED VIOLENCE AND RELATED ISSUES

By Generation Lead Zambia – Auxiria Mwanza – Secretary General

Generation Lead Zambia would like to join the many Zambian institutions, citizens and citizens of the Global Village to echo the voices and stand in solidarity with survivors of Gender based Violence.
Generation Lead Zambia has noted with sadness the reported increase of gender based violence cases as recorded in the second quarter of 2022, as released by the police. Gender based violence is a cancer to society and if left unresolved it can destroy the nation, gender inequality is a threat to the fabric that holds the country and governs its developmental agenda.
As a revolutionary movement we understand that gender issues to be addressed in this country are beyond the case files at the police, they are issues that are close to home but are never given the limelight that can help move our country forward.
Issues of equal representation of women in the political landscape of our nation: as the new government came into power we hoped and desired to see more women appointed and forming the governing structures of the nation, it saddens us to have even less than 40% women in leadership of the newly formed government.
Issues of equality in land access and distribution: while we appreciate the efforts that have been put in place by the ministry of lands and local government, we still remain aware and awakened to the reality of unequal distribution and access to the land by the men and women.
Issues of women empowerment and economic self-determination: 58 years post-independence, and Zambia has not moved the agenda of women empowerment to look beyond women owning small businesses and only thriving as marketeers. Women desire more and hope to see more commitment to women empowerment. The issue of forming cooperatives and small groups for empowerment is not sustainable in the long run hence we call for more adjustments in empowerment programs all across.
Issues of justice and protection: much has to be done in our nation to ensure the protection of all genders especially women. The police force and the protective wings of our nation need to intensify and improve on the protective systems and structures. We have been following the recent cases of increased homicide, high divorce rates in the country due to gender based violence and related issues, and the most recent abductions of the girls and their case process. We were saddened by the whole process and the manner in which the police force as well as the society failed to protect the whistleblowers, the girls. The case has been in public domain. It is questionable that even to date the public has still not been given a befitting update on the case that has been in public domain leading to more speculations and false information. Yes we want cases like the abductions of the girls that are already in public domain be transparently processed and cleared in the confines of the law. We are tired of seeing cases die a natural death.
As a post-independence generation we wish to see a nation that supports its women and ensures they thrive. The solution is to see women as equal partners in development.
